Bei einem Shakespeareschen Sonett hat man 14 Zeilen, wobei jede Zeile ein jambischer Pentameter ist (10 oder 11 Silben, je nachdem, ob es ein männlicher oder weiblicher Reim ist). Die ersten 12 Zeilen sind dabei in 4-zeilige Strophen mit Kreuzreimen unterteilt und die letzten beiden Zeilen bilden ein "heroic couplet", also einen normalen Reim, der aber auch im jambischen Pentameter geschrieben ist.

When have you last set sail and crossed the sea
To find the wonders of the ancient shores
Not on TV - but for your heart to see
Courageously to step through hidden doors
Remember that we came from farthest stars
And here we are, glued to this solid ball
So now you're asking: should we fly to Mars?

Regretfully I mourn the grievous loss
Of our old exploratory mind
Most people are content, complacent, gross
Preferring instant truth to a true find
